1. CONSTRUCTION OF THE ŠENTVID TUNNEL

On 22 April 2008 you are kindly invited to construction site of the Šentvid tunnel in Ljubljana.

The Šentvid tunnel was initially anticipated to be a two-tube tunnel without access to the Celovška road, but due to increased traffic a proposal to build a full, three tube junction within the tunnel was accepted. The construction of the Šentvid tunnel is a challenge for designers and civil engineers, made even more difficult by the extremely unfavourable geological and geotechnical conditions. The right and left cavern within the junction are 58 and 68 m long and have maximum clearance of approx 320 m2. The length of the left tunnel tube is 1,033 metres and of the right is 1,06 metres.

2. TRAFFIC SURVEILLANCE AND OPERATION CENTRE ON THE MOTORWAY VRANSKO-BLAGOVICA

On 22 April 2008 you are kindly invited to visit the centre for traffic surveillance and operation on the motorway section Vransko – Blagovica.

The surveillance centre Vransko is equipped with the system for traffic surveillance and operation called “intelligent motorway” with the purpose of ensuring optimum traffic conditions regarding traffic weather conditions and extraordinary events on the motorway.

The basic functions of the intelligent motorway are the following:
• Data collection and processing(weather and traffic);
• Surveillance over the present conditions on the motorway;
• System operation surveillance;
• Traffic operation and informing users.

3. PARTICULARITIES OF MOTORWAY CONSTRUCTION IN THE KARST REGION AND THE UNDERGROUND TREASURES OF POSTOJNA CAVE

The Technical visit will be combined with an impressive sightseeing tour and is therefore recommended for accompanying persons as well. We would like to introduce to you the one of the most distinctive landmarks of Slovenia –Karst in the south-west region of the country.
A long tradition of excellent research of Karstic phenomena and its unique position in the centre of classical Karst have promoted the Karst Research Institute to one of the most recognised karstological centres in the world. We would like to present their specific role in highway construction to you. After the presentations you are invited to visit the most visited cave in Europe and the largest cave in the “classical Karst” – Postojna cave.

4. UNIQUE TECHNIC AND UNIQUE CULTURE HEAVY VEHICLE SIMULATOR

Within the EC Sixth Framework project SPENS (Sustainable Pavements from New Members States) a visit to the test field near Maribor will be organised.

A set of 6 different types of pavements was prepared and will be tested by the Heavy Vehicle Simulator, a unique machine provided by VTI (Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute), a partner in the SPENS project. A must see for all who deal with design, construction and maintenance of pavements. After visiting the test site, the tour will join the post conference tour to Maribor and Ptuj.

Maribor is the second biggest town in Slovenia and totally different from Ljubljana and the western parts of the country. It is situated on the banks of the Drava River, in the hilly countryside among the best vineyards. You will visit the city's famous wine cellar and taste excellent wines from the region.

The oldest town in Slovenia, Ptuj is located just a short drive from Maribor. The writer Tacitus mentioned it for the first time already in the year 69. Numerous archaeological remains prove that the city experienced its first period of prosperity as the Roman town of Poetovio. The present much admired appearance of the city originates from the Middle Ages when Ptuj experienced its second rise to wealth and prominence. You will explore its beauty in a walking tour through the town and the visit of the Ptuj Castle. The castle, the Dominican and Minorite monasteries, the Provost church and the old city hall are some of the curiosities of the curiosities of the town, worth seeing. The heritage of past centuries will enchant even the most demanding visitor of this town.
