 Invitation Minimize
It is my pleasure to invite you, on behalf of the European Commission, to the second European Road Transport Research Arena TRA 2008, to be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 21 - 24 April 2008.

Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for Science & Research

In a Europe of many cultures, traditions and languages, one of the challenges lies in getting researchers, business people and policy makers to speak with one voice. As sustainable mobility rises up the political agenda, it becomes so much more important that the major players have an opportunity to meet, so they can discuss the direction to take in the future.TRA2008 will provide such a meeting place.

Efficient mobility is a key issue for policy makers. Enabling the free movement of people and goods is crucial to economic prosperity and quality of life. However, road congestion in the EU is on the increase. The TRA 2008 conference represents a major opportunity for EU policy makers to move towards a better transport system. Strong Commission support for this meeting reflects the importance of road transport within the larger European policy agenda.

European industry should take full advantage of the freedom and flexibility offered by a state-of-the-art road transport system. But industrial competitiveness in road transport also means exporting European transport-related products. The automotive sector is a key player in the European economy; EU carmakers deliver multi-billion euro turnover for Europe's economy and millions of jobs for Europeans.
It is by finding and exploiting synergies with other stakeholders that European carmakers will maintain its place in European industry. TRA 2008 will cover all aspects of road transport research, focussing on the 'Strategic Research Agenda' defined by the European Road Transport Research Council, known as ERTRAC. This is all about the sector getting together to identify its research needs. It means that there is a strategic plan for the sector, leading to better, more efficient use of resources and ensuring that research delivers what is needed. This also means combining and coordinating European, national, regional and private research actions, and improving the networking, clustering and pooling of research and development capacities.

TRA 2008 will provide a forum to promote all European road research efforts, making it a golden opportunity to create a true 'European Road Transport Research Arena'.

Slovenia, worldwide known as a green country lies on the crossing of two important transport corridors. The arrival of researchers, industry representatives and road managers to this arena of cooperation, exchange of science achievements and plans for the future means a great challenge for the creators of greener, safer and smarter transport in Europe. Slovenia wants to actively participate with its professional potential. The conference concurs with Slovenia's presidency to the European Union in the first half of the 2008 and this is an excellent opportunity to underline at the conference some themes from the presidency programme, among them certainly being influence of transport to climate changes and ensuring safety on roads. And the same themes are covered in the main conference topics in Ljubljana.

Radovan Žerjav
Minister of Transport of the Republic of Slovenia

It will be a great honour to meet the highest representatives of the main organisers, European Commission, Conference of European Directors of Roads and European Road Transport Research Advisory Council, authors of papers at plenary and strategic sessions, authors of presentations and other conference participants at the TRA 2008 conference. Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Slovenia supports the local organisers of the event and joins to the invitation for participation in great numbers.

Slovenia is a beautiful country; people are hospitable and excellent organisers. We would like to convince you of all of the above. Therefore I invite you to Ljubljana from21 to 24 April 2008 with a wish that after the conference we are all enriched for new knowledge and encouragement for more effective and environmentally friendly development of transport in Europe.

On behalf of CEDR, EC, ERTRAC, and Slovenian local organisers it is a great pleasure for us to invite you to the 2nd Transport Research Arena conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia from 21 to 24 April 2008.

The main purpose of the TRA is the implementation of the European Research Area on road transport. TRA is most attractive for the research industry and to those who have to implement the results of research into transport: namely road administrations at national, regional and local levels, as well as vehicle manufacturers and fuel producers.

Vili Žavrlan,
Chairman of the Management Committee

The conference will deal with climate changes and road safety, embraced in the slogan "Greener, safer and smarter transport for Europe”. The conference programme will be organised in several plenary, strategic and thematic sessions based on European road research needs and agendas.

TRA 2008 will offer an excellent opportunity for participants from the member states that have joined the European Union in 2004 and 2007, as well as from other European non-EU countries, to find new partners and to meet the EC officials who will assist them in their future research efforts, transport of goods, transport safety and security, etc.

At the TRA 2008 exhibition, conference participants will get information on the Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7) as well as other action plans and initiatives, and see the work of a variety of EU-funded projects that are making major strides towards better road transport.

The weeklong TRA 2008 conference will feature a number of technical visits and other events showcasing some of Slovenia's major road transport facilities and projects, and cultural highlights.

We warmly invite you all to attend theTRA2008 in Ljubljana!
